Prolotherapy developed in 1930s. An American surgeon, Dr George S. Hackett, found the origin of musculoskeletal pain could come from the ligament laxity by clinical experiences and he started to perform Prolotherapy injection in those patients in 1950s. Thus, Prolotherapy would enhance the injured ligaments to heal in many body parts, restoring the joints stability to eliminate the chronic pain. This also used in treatment for degenerative osteoarthritis. The clinical results of Prolotherapy show effectiveness.

Dr Hemwall continued the applications of Prolotherapy and taught many doctors to become “prolotherapist”. He also started medical mission in Mexico. Many their contributions give the bases of The Hackett-Hemwall foundation,HHF, and American Association of Orthopedic Medicine, AAOM, which are both main education institutes of Prolotherapy in the world. They keep giving volunteer medical consultations and training programs in Mexico.

The development of Prolotherapy in Taiwan began a decade ago. Since the year of 2003, there were some doctors who received training of Prolotherapy abroad and then returned to help many patients with musculoskeletal pain. In hopes of the expansion and promotion of the Prolotherapy in Taiwan, 38 doctors gathered and applied foundation to Ministry of the Interior in October, 2013.
TAPRM was then formally founded in Feb. 2014, and then proved by Taiwan government in May, 2014 as an officially proved national association. We aim for promotion of medical care and education of Prolotherapy and regenerative medicine in Taiwan to help more patients with pain, and aim to connect with international associations to introduce updated information of prolotherapy and regenerative medicine into Taiwan.

Message from Founding President
It is my honor to found TAPRM with some best friends who devoted themselves to promote prolotherapy in Taiwan. Prolotherapy helps me a lot as I have multiple directional instability of shoulder with habitual dislocation. It is a really effective treatment that everyone should know in this generation. If all doctors know about prolotherapy, the world may change. Thanksgiving for all teachers around the world especially in AAOM and HHF who teach prolotherapy to learners from all over the world. We will keep spreading the seed of prolotherapy to Taiwan people. Hope the pain management and musculoskeletal medicine will get a lot of improvement in Taiwan, and many Taiwan people will get much help from prolotherapy and regenerative medicine.

Prolotherapy/Regenerative Injection Therapy (RIT) has existed since 1930s. Doctors practicing Prolotherapy know that this is an excellent therapy, and there are plenty of level-one evidences to support the efficacy of this therapy. However, it is still not a mainstream pain management procedure in western medicine. One of the reasons is that many doctors and the general populations do not know the goodness of this treatment.
We all know that glucose or platelet rich plasma used in Prolotherapy and RIT should not have any side effects. The essential part of the treatment is that the doctors can diagnosed which parts the body needs their soft tissues to be proliferated or regenerated, that requires good knowledge in biomechanics and pain medicine. And to achieve the best results, the proliferants need to be accurately delivered to the sites of the lesion. It gives the author the greatest honor and pleasure to be able to write and witness the inauguration of the Taiwan Association of Prolotherapy and Regenerative Medicine.
The author is deeply impressed by eye-witnessing a group of dedicated and passionate Taiwan doctors to improved and sharpen their techniques in regenerative injection therapy. We will make every effort to work together to do more high quality researches in Prolotherapy and regenerative medicine, to make it one of the mainstream pain management procedures. Also join hands together to promote this great therapy to more doctors and people among Chinese and around the world to benefit more people.

Prolotherapy or regenerative injection therapy (RIT) is young to Taiwan; but is definitely one of the most rapid growing professions on earth. The best part of this pain approach, among others, is its pursuit for ultimate cure of pain, as well as least use of pain medications (steroids, NSAIDs, etc) and unnecessary surgery. As a pioneer prolotherapy practitioner, I sincerely appreciate Dr. Frederick Lin, president of the TAPRM, and his administration, for their enthusiasm and continuous efforts in founding this great academy. With serial aggressive international collaborations held by the academy, I believe there will soon be many world-class professional prolotherapists throughout the island.
